How does Google work?

Whenever I talk to clients about search engine ranking the only one that seems to matter is Google, so if that is the most important, what can we do to improve rankings in Google?

Understanding how Google works

Google uses a system called PageRank™ to determine how important a site is to a keyword search. The most important aspect of PageRank is looking at how many pages link to a particular page. The more pages that ‘link’ to your page, the more important your page becomes. On top of this, if a page that links to your page is also ‘important’ or highly ranked in Google then your ranking goes up.

Unfortunately it’s not just about getting as many links as possible, the links need to come from sites that are relevant to your own and Google looks at many aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.

Getting better rankings in Google

I still maintain that Google is one of the fairest search engines in that it provides good results, based on content and relevance. To improve you results in Google are the same as for any search engine optimisation:

  • Think about what words people will use to search for your services and include these HIGH up in your content
  • Add these words to images, links, descriptions and Meta tags
  • Add links to your site on other site wherever possible
  • Submit articles (with links to your site) to publications and online directories.
  • Add career vacancies to local directories
  • Submit your site to the Yellow Pages sites and other directories
  • GET YOUR SITE LINKED TO FROM AS MANY SITES AS POSSIBLE!

And just in case you are in any doubt, you better go an add your site to as many sites as possible!
